The United Nations Program to reduce Disaster Risk (UNISDR) is making progress to implement the Sendai Framework of Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan and in all the United Nation member states. Kobe University proudly contributes to the successful transfer of sciences into policies, and this month, Dr. Christopher Gomez of the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences has been called upon to review and provide advice on tsunami hazard documents that will shape the future policies for tsunami hazards and risk management.
Dr. Gomez has been working on tsunamis in 2004 in North Sumatra, Banda Aceh, then in 2007 in Java (Indonesia), in 2011 on the Tohoku coast, and in the last 5 years in New Zealand in the bays of the Canterbury area. Some of this research was conducted in partnership with the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) at Kyoto University, from which he received funding to conduct laboratory experiments in order to better understand the complex processes of mixing water and sediments.
