In 1969, the physics teaching group in the Kobe University of Mercantile Marine began making a helium liquefier (a cascade-type liquefier: liquefaction capacity of about 1 liter / h).
In 1976, the Hyper-Cryogenic Laboratory was established and a helium liquefier (liquefaction capacity, 12 liter / h) manufactured by CTI was installed. In 1994, the equipment was updated to the current helium liquefier. The Hyper-Cryogenic Laboratory was badly damaged in the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, but the liquefaction system did not suffer major damage and in 1996 it was transferred to the newly constructed Hyper-Cryogenic Laboratory.
In 2003, following the integration of Kobe University and Kobe University of Mercantile Marine, it was newly launched as the Kobe University Faculty of Maritime Sciences Hyper-Cryogenic Laboratory.
The operations and maintenance of the liquefier is carried out by the Superconductivity Science Research Lab of the Power Environment Science Course, the Faculty of Maritime Sciences.
